History of the Department:

The subject of History was introduced at Swahid Peoli Phukan College, Namti on 01-07-1975 and it was promoted into a full-fledged Department with major courses on 01-07-1989. Since 1989, the department has been popularizing the subject producing considerable number of graduates with history honours, many of whom are working in different sectors. The departmental major classes are held at Room No. 9 and the core classes are held in different allotted rooms. The department has its own library enriched with more than two hundred Text and Reference books and study materials which are consulted by the faculty members and are also given to the students for specific period. 

To provide exposer to the historical places and sites of the country the department organizes excursions for the students. Our students often visit historical monuments of Delhi, Agra, Joypur, Guwahati, Sivasagar, Charaideon, Gargaon, etc.

Some noted teachers like N. N. Borgohain, Achyut Deep Saikia, Indreswar Das and Mrs. Ajanta Gogoi Das have taught and contributed considerably to the promotion of the department as well as historical research. Many prominent historians and social scientists of national and international repute visit the department and interact with our students and faculty members. 

Vision and Mission:

The college was established with noble objectives of uplifting the backward socio-cultural and educational conditions of the locality with the esteemed goal of disseminating quality education and making the department a pioneering one offering utmost service to the society and the nation. The department takes initiatives for all round development of the students. The department especially emphasizes on:
