Department at a Glance:
The Department of economics is one of the oldest and main constituent departments of the SPP College, established in the year 1970. The Department offers Undergraduate courses (B.A. & B.Sc) in Economics and its branches viz. Rural Development, Environmental and Multi-Disciplinary courses, conduct need based rural economic research studies, organize seminar and workshop and undertake outreach and consultancy activities in economics.
History of the Department:
The Department of Economics started along with other Arts Department since the establishment of the SPP College in the year 1970. Founder Lecturer of Economics Department was Sri Bolaram Bora. Thereafter, Mrs. Mira Kakoti, Shri. Benu Bora, Late Karuna Kanta Boragohain, Shri. Ranjan Kumar Phukan, Mrs. Minu Hazarika served in this department. Since, its inception, the department has been committed towards promoting high quality and relevance teaching. During the last 50 years, the Department has carved out a niche in economics and many of its alumni have distinguished themselves in both academic and administrative spheres at national level.
Presently, the Department is headed by Syed Abdur Rahman who has also been the ex-student of this college. The Department has three (3) Faculty members and one for Rural Development. The strength of the department is in our faculty with a wide range of specialties in economics. All faculty members of the department are well-respected authors and scholars and all are active in teaching, research and social activities. The Department of Economics is the hub of a number of academic and co-curriculur activities. The Department has organised prestigious academic seminar and conducted minor research projects.
Vision
The department has the envision of generating rural talents through teaching and research by creating an understanding of the global, national and local economic issues among them and to develop proper analytical skills to draw out a solution to such economic issues.
