History of the Department
The Department of Assamese is a hub of literary activities. It was established at the time of the inception of the college in 1970. Honours Course has been started in 1986 with 10 students. Since then onwards so many students have been obtaining their B.A. Degree taking honours in Assamese. A good number of them got appointment in various honourable jobs .Some of them contributed in the field of Assamese literature. Dr. Dhrubajyoti Nath, distinguished academician, at present Principal of this college belongs to this department. The faculty members of this department namely Prof Jyoti Gogoi, Associate Professor, Prof. Nilakshi Saikia, Associate Professor rendered their contribution towards the development of Assamese language and literature. Dr. Mausumi Rekha Khaund, Assistant Professor obtained her Ph.D. in Tribal language is associated with creative writing such as poetry, short story etc. A large number of Research Papers and Research based Articles written by her published in different Journals.
Mission and Vision
1. To empower students to become full participants in the department throw excellent instruction in language, literature and cultural awareness and study skill.
2. Provide quality programmes for learners with specialized Mother Tongue needs and goals.
3. To provide students to make them efficiency in Assamese language and Indian literature.
4. To develop the ability to use the Assamese language effectively.
5. To learn other languages with the help of their efficiency in mother language.
Course /Programme
SPP College is affiliated to Dibrugarh University and the college offered only Under Graduate programme since its inception in 1970. However, the concerned University keeps on changing course programme as per situation demand. And thus latest course and syllabus offered by the University is given into two course that is, B.A Semester Non CBCS and B.A.CBCS course. Besides it has been rendering its service to the Directorate of Distance Education, Dibrugarh University in UG & PG courses and UG course of K.K. Handique open University.

Facilities:
Infrastructure of our department includes a separate office, a library with more than 300 hundred Books, a cultural museum, separate class room, computer, printer, white board etc.
Events that are regularly organized in the department include classroom teaching and discussions, seminars, workshops, group discussion, remedial classes, departmental fresher’s social meet, parting social meet, picnic and educational tours within and outside state. The department has its own magazine named Antara, and a wall magazine too. The department also includes a cultural society named Asomiya-Bhasa-Sahitya Sanstha which is involved in many socio-cultural and educational events.
